These mental maps are our representations and beliefs about ourselves and the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I say that they haven\u2019t updated their GPS, I mean that they haven\u2019t updated their beliefs about themselves, about others, about what surrounds them, about the job market, their career path, their profile and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine you\u2019re going on a long road trip and the GPS in your car was last updated more than 5 years ago! What\u2019s going to happen? The maps are out of date and no longer correspond to the reality. With this GPS, you run the risk of going off course several times, getting lost along the way and never arriving at your destination\u2026 or at least very late! Your car\u2019s GPS needs to be updated regularly to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The same goes for your brain and its mental maps. Just like your car, <strong>it\u2019s essential that you regularly update your perceptions, assumptions, beliefs and knowledge about yourself and the world around you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">I often notice with the people I work with: they come with deep-rooted beliefs about themselves \u201cI\u2019m too much of this or not enough of that\u201d, about their career path \u201cIt\u2019s too atypical, it doesn\u2019t make sense, no one will understand it\u201d, about what the job market is like today \u201cThey\u2019re looking for experts. I lack certain qualifications\u201d. These beliefs are generally negative\u2026and are based on assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">These beliefs are often based either on an experience they had 10 years ago during a job interview, or on stories they\u2019ve heard around them (my colleague tells me they\u2019re looking for such and such a profile), or on what the press says (after 50, you\u2019ll never find a job).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>They are rarely accurate, and in any case deserve to be revisited and updated.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to make a professional transition, it\u2019s essential that you start by questioning the validity of the knowledge you\u2019re relying on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Get into the habit of questioning what you think you know about yourself, your career path, your past experiences, your skills, your profile AND about others, your environment, and the job market.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CHECK\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>What are your beliefs?<\/strong> About your background, your profile, what you have to offer, who you are today, your strengths and weaknesses, your desires and needs. About the job market, what is a career transition, your definition of success, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Where do your beliefs come from?<\/strong> From your fears or those of the people around you? A lack of self-confidence? An imposter syndrome? Stories you\u2019ve heard without really remembering the source?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>How old are your beliefs?<\/strong> Are they still relevant today? Hasn\u2019t the job market and society changed? Isn\u2019t what an employer is looking for today different from 5 years ago?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>In short, ask yourself if there are other theories and points of view than the one you know so far? <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Faced with your professional transition, it\u2019s essential that you seek out new information, keep an open mind to what\u2019s out there today, and be ready to change some of your beliefs!<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:none\">It\u2019s important that you update your GPS.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you don\u2019t get stuck in obsolete representations, don\u2019t let yourself be trapped by false beliefs, don\u2019t lock yourself into your current situation, because of beliefs or knowledge you think you have about yourself and your environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">As Pascal said, \u201cWoe to the man who, at least once in his life, has not questioned everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>I\u2019d like to leave you with this idea: question what you think about yourself, your profile, your career path, the job market, a professional reconversion, what a future employer might think, what you could aspire to.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Question everything, seek out new information, don\u2019t let yourself get stuck in your beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Take the time to update your GPS, it\u2019s what\u2019s going to enable you to make your transition in the best possible conditions.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>En tant qu&rsquo;expatri\u00e9e ou humanitaire, si tu souhaites amorcer une transition professionnelle, il est essentiel que tu commences par questionner la validit\u00e9 des connaissances sur lesquelles tu t\u2019appuies !
