How to reframe my humanitarian skills.<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many humanitarians in transition ask themselves:
\ud83d\udc49\u00a0\u00ab How can I translate and transfer my humanitarian skills outside the sector?\u00bb
\ud83d\udc49\u00a0\u00ab Which employer will understand and value them?

These doubts are normal. But let\u2019s be clear: it\u2019s not up to your future employer to guess the value of your humanitarian background. It\u2019s up to you to make your skills visible, clear, and compelling.<\/strong>

And what I often see is that before convincing the job market, you first need to convince yourself!
<\/strong>
Good news: this work is simpler than it seems<\/strong>.It mainly requires a bit of perspective and reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I offer two steps to identify, reframe, and showcase your humanitarian skills, <\/strong>in order to turn them into real assets, within or outside the humanitarian sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Identify all your transferable humanitarian skills<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You already possess desired professional qualities<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As a humanitarian, you have developed many transferable skills that are highly valued far beyond your sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc49\u00a0Soft skills :<\/strong>adaptability, resilience, intercultural communication, crisis management, empathy, quick decision-making\u2026\ud83d\udc49\u00a0Professional skills: <\/strong>\u00a0project management, budget monitoring, partnerships, logistics, team leadership\u2026

These transferable humanitarian skills are of interest\u00a0<\/strong>to the private sector, the public sector, local NGOs as well as international organizations. They provide a solid foundation to bounce back and succeed in your career transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A practical exercise: the inventory<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Start by taking stock of all your past experiences<\/strong>:professional, personal, voluntary, family, travel\u2026 go back as far as necessary (studies, student jobs, extracurricular commitments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, list the skills developed <\/strong>\u00a0through these different experiences: academic, professional, technical, personal, and soft skills.

This exercise not only allows you to clarify your transferable humanitarian skills, but also to rediscover forgotten strengths, identify common threads, regain self-confidence, \u00a0<\/strong>and prepare an\u00a0excellent foundation for your CV and job interviews.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: How to translate your humanitarian skills into universal language<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eliminate humanitarian jargon<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You speak the language of your sector<\/strong>\u2026 which only other humanitarians understand! To be clear, imagine you are explaining your background to a relative working in a local company.
